Skanska provided construction management services for the new Student Services Center at the University of Baltimore’s campus in the urban Mount Royal neighborhood of Baltimore City. The small 11,ooo-SF building footprint on this tight urban site required vertical stacking of the project. The new 56,600-SF center houses the Center for Student Involvement, the Diversity Education and Programs office, career center, a food service area, bookstore, student meeting rooms and a 200-seat theater. The primary program elements of the project required simple, unencumbered flexible space that will probably change over time. The primary exterior material of the building is a smooth soft Jerusalem limestone with structural glass used at the corner lounges and zinc-coated copper cladding at the theater element. The interior finishes include slate and stained concrete floors, flush wood and cherry panels. Exposed structure, ductwork, and lighting create a “glow from within” during evening and night hours and communicate a strong sense of place for the University of Baltimore.
